7 Reasons Why James Ellsworth Is Obviously Not A Main-Eventer

6. It Makes SmackDown A Joke

SmackDown Live is light and fun. Stories are cohesive, and a weekly episode is far removed from the long slog that is a three-hour Raw. But when Ellsworth is the central figure over guys like Ambrose, Styles, and even Cena, there’s an issue.

SmackDown runs the risk of becoming the irrelevant show once more for a whole other reason. Big returns like Edge and Undertaker might counter-act this temporarily, but having Ellsworth close the show every week sends a message of comedic value to your audience, and that it shouldn’t be taken for anything other than this.

Bearing in mind the target audience for WWE programming, this is definitely an adult form of comedy that will detach young fans before anyone. No, we’re not in the ‘PG Era’ anymore, but that doesn’t mean that there aren’t massive numbers of kids tuning in to watch their favourite superstars fight. I’d like to draw comparison to how I felt as a kid every time ‘Big Dick’ Johnson interfered in a match/promo – Okay, it’s not that bad, but you get my point.
