7 Ups And 2 Downs For WWE NXT (Jun 29)
3. Tian Sha Reign Supreme, But Martinez Is Knocked Out Cold
In something of a rare occurrence, this week saw a mixed tag team encounter go down on the black and gold show as Mercedes Martinez and Jake Atlas teamed up to take on Tian Sha's Xia Li and Boa. Atlas had decided to join the fight seven days ago after sensing Martinez had perhaps bitten off more than she could chew with the supernatural squad.
What ensued was a rather enjoyable encounter which showed off Atlas' supreme athleticism, Martinez's devastating ability to suplex her opponents into oblivion, and Li's always savage array of kicks. Boa was seemingly just along for the ride. Unfortunately, though the match itself didn't do much wrong, and even the distraction of Mei Ying rising from her throne made sense in the grand scheme of things, the whole bout was soon overshadowed by a sickening spinning heel kick to Martinez's skull.
From the second Li's boot connected with Martinez's temple, it was clear something had gone drastically wrong. Thankfully, the official quickly called a halt to the action and Li and Boa were crowned the victors via unexpected stoppage. No one likes to see a star get seemingly knocked out cold in a match, so here's hoping Martinez is back up to speed in the near future.
The only silver lining in this unfortunate accident is the fact that Li's aura as a bona fide face-kicking badass has been heightened even more. And when Martinez is (hopefully) cleared for a return, you can bet your ass she'll be looking for revenge.
