7 Ups And 4 Downs From Last Night's NXT (April 15)
1. The Show Must Go On
Which brings us to our biggest point of all, the fact this is even happening in the first place and the backdrop against which it happened last night. Mere hours before NXT went live WWE announced a swathe of brutal redundancies across every department of their business, with tonight's show even featuring a few names who have been declared surplus to requirements.
Here's the thing. Yes, these are incredibly trying times and yes, a lot of businesses are having to make very tough decisions, but not a single one of the excuses that you can apply to other companies really sticks with WWE here. Financially speaking, this was not forced upon them.
They spent years hoarding talent to stop other promotions getting a foothold, and then jettisoned them when they know there's nowhere else to go. They tried every trick in the book to be declared an "essential service", but didn't consider their employees to be a part of that. They developed financial reserves stretching into the hundreds of millions of the back of their performers, but would then use that money to safeguard their livelihoods.
There is no way you can spin this that isn't grotesque, and that cloud hung over this show from start to finish.
