7 Ups From Last Night's WWE NXT (April 6)

3. A Word From The Drifter

The sole in-ring segment on this week's show came in the form of a match taped just before NXT TakeOver: Dallas went on the air. Two weeks earlier, Elias Samson lost to - then attacked - Johnny Gargano, only letting up when Apollo Crews made the save. In Dallas, the two NXT stars would have the opportunity to get their hands on one another.

Before the bout started, "The Drifter" came out, guitar in hand, and stood in the ring, ready to perform. He announced that he had a song composed especially for the Dallas audience, and he started to get into it, but the crowd's booing (and chants of "We want wrestling!") forced him to stop. Crews then came out to start the match.

Even though Samson lacks the talent to make a positive impact in NXT, there's something about his "Drifter" character that I find really entertaining. Maybe it's the implausibility of it all (how does a guy who spends his time playing guitar and riding the rails have so much time to work on his traps?) or Samson's modest-but-good-enough musical ability, but the well-manicured hobo has quickly become a hilarious part of NXT - even if it's for the wrong reasons.
