4. 2006 WWE Draft (ECW Draft)
Remember that time WWE tried to exploit the ECW brand for every penny they could? The worst part of that all started right here.
Just shy of a year removed from the first (and by far the best) ECW One Night Stand show, WWE decided to make ECW a third brand. Announcing the move on 25 May 2006, the 2006 "draft" would come just four days later. And the haste and lack of importance was the writing on the wall for this future failed experiment.
This consisted of a segment on Raw and two draft picks. Clearly this was rushed to try to build anticipation for the (equally rushed) One Night Stand sequel and subsequent television debut of the brand, on 11 June 2006 and 13 June 2006 respectively. Rob Van Dam and Kurt Angle became the two choices for ECW. Two great names, but the quality versus quantity argument doesn't work here unfortunately.
This was all so thrown together in an attempt to capitalize on the success of the original revival in 2005. But the lack of sincerity in this attempt (and authenticity compared to the real thing) was what caused the eventual downfall.
Nobody needed this to happen, but money talks in this industry. Until it stops coming in. And now we will have to forever remember the image of Vince McMahon becoming ECW champion while simultaneously killing the prestige of what that used to mean.
