Ever wonder why Ryback went from bullying crew members backstage one week to aligning with Paul Heyman the next in the fall of 2013? Well, there was more to that odd couple pairing than you might think.

When Ryback rekindled his rivalry with CM Punk in the final few months of 2013, the idea was that it would allow Ryback to be built back up as a top heel before going on to challenge The Undertaker and his storied streak the following year at WrestleMania 30.

Brock Lesnar had always been under consideration to face 'Taker that year after his previously scheduled match with The Rock was called off, but Ryback emerged as a strong favorite that fall. If nothing else, it was apparent officials had high hopes for Ryback's heel push, especially considering he was being endorsed by Heyman for a time.

The storyline would have been that Heyman's former client, Punk, failed to break the streak at WrestleMania 29, so he would have had someone else attempt to do it at WrestleMania 30.

Of course, that wound up being Brock - but Ryback nearly clinched that coveted spot before the idea was abandoned.
