7 Wrestlers Who Benefited From ANOTHER Wrestler's Injury
3. Lex Luger
The legend of Lex Luger's second time holding the WCW World Heavyweight Championship remains in regular discussion for its good (the shock win on Nitro) and its bad (the screwy loss back to Hollywood Hogan just days later), but much of his first time atop the WCW mountain has been lost to time.
That reign, too, had its positives and negatives. Despite his 230-day stint being the fourth-longest in the belt's history, Lex Luger's supposed propelling into main event territory wasn't the success it should have been, as it was marred by the controversy surrounding Ric Flair's sour exit from the company and his stealing of the Big Gold Belt. Defeating Barry Windham for the vacant title in a match which featured one of the industry's most famous double turns was fine, but it wasn't the same as a pay-per-view victory over a prime 'Nature Boy'.
Luger ought to just be grateful he got the belt in 1991, as he wasn't originally primed for it: Sting, his tag team partner at the time, was. A serious knee injury knocked him down, though, and Jim Herd turned his eye and belted up Luger to head the main event picture while navigating a Ric Flair-less WCW.
