How Good Was 'Hollywood' Hulk Hogan Actually?
3. Range
Range was never Hogan's forte in the ring or on the microphone during his babyface heyday, and the same could be said for him being WCW's biggest heel. Every week, Hogan would be bragging about spending Ted Turner's money, being the biggest force in wrestling, and about how he was too big a star to play by the rules.
Sure, it got a little tiring after a while, but it was damn effective. As with all the best wrestling promos, they are at their most powerful when they were laced with truth, and like him or loathe him, Hollywood Hogan was undisputedly the biggest star wrestling had ever produced at the time that he was cutting these promos.
When that's the fact of the matter, why would you beat any other drum?
Ultimately, you can't blame Hogan for having an 'if it ain't broke, don't fix it' approach when he revolutionized wrestling twice. The only problem is that he could have been even better and left a legacy that isn't so easy to take shots at if he'd have just allowed himself to be the fall guy a little more often. If he'd have given smaller guys a chance to share a mic and a ring with him, he'd have more great rivalries, more great moments, and a whole lot more range.
