Some wrestlers find sweet solace in playing the jerk, bitch, spiteful or cowardly.
It's hardly easy to be a heel in 2018, and yet there are those in WWE who relish the challenge. Look at the recent case of Becky Lynch as an example of the stormy tides performers must swim against if they're going to provoke the reaction they're supposed to. When Becky turned on Charlotte Flair at SummerSlam, it was supposed to make her hated by all.
Instead, she's become an anti-hero the female ranks have arguably never seen. Comparisons are being made to Steve Austin's rebellious 'Stone Cold' guise, and Lynch, as a result of her swagger, prior popularity and newfound social media zest, has become more trendy and beloved than ever.
Her heel turn didn't work the way WWE wanted it to, but they've been able to adapt and deliver a must-see character nonetheless. Others in the same locker room can't claim to have been so versatile when they were asked to play both villain and hero during the same run.
Let's hope they, unlike the charming Becky, stick to the heel side for good...
