8 Non-Wrestlers Who Were Wrestling Champions

6. Oklahoma - Cruiserweight Champion

Ed Ferrara is best known as being Vince Russo€™s right hand man and writing partner. Together the two worked for the World Wrestling Federation during the height of the Attitude Era. However, the creative duo decided to tackle another challenge and headed to WCW with the hope of revitalizing the company€™s product. After some time down South, it was decided to put Ferrara on television as a competitor. Ferrara had some brief experience as a competitor on the indy scene prior to his being hired as writer for the WWF. However, Ferrara wouldn€™t simply compete as himself. Instead, he portrayed a character named Oklahoma -- an obvious and distasteful dig at Jim Ross. Oklahoma was even accompanied to the ring by JR€™s good pal, €œDr. Death€ Steve Williams. At first, Oklahoma would simply sit in at the commentary table, impersonating Jim Ross and mocking his play-by-play style. Eventually, Oklahoma began feuding with women€™s wrestler, Madusa -- who was also the Cruiserweight Champion at the time. The two battled on Nitro in an Evening Gown farce in January of 2000. At that year€™s Souled Out pay-per-view, Oklahoma actually defeated Madusa for the Cruiserweight title. Ferrara€™s championship reign as Oklahoma would only last a few days, as he was forced to vacate the Cruiserweight title due to exceeding the division€™s weight limit. Mercifully, the Oklahoma character disappeared shortly thereafter. It also must be said that Ed Ferrara and Vince Russo have since patched things up with Jim Ross after apologizing for their mocking impersonation of him.
