8 Pieces Of Overwhelming Evidence That Vince McMahon Is Not A Visionary

2. Stupid Ideas, Part IV: Linda McMahon€™s Failed Senatorial Runs

The McMahons are staunch Republicans €“ there€™s no real surprise there. But why, with the negative publicity and lack of mainstream credibility endemic to the pro wrestling business and WWF/E in particular, Vince and Linda believed that she could deliver a Republican win for a United States Senatorial seat in their home state of Connecticut remains a baffling mystery. Why they tried it twice in two years is one right up there with the Bermuda Triangle. Controversy and poor publicity dogged both attempts €“ one in 2009/2010, one in 2011/2012 €“ and inevitably led to her losses on both occasions. Of course, this was all totally foreseeable by anyone who€™d heard of McMahon and the WWF/E, and certainly many commentators at the time did foresee the outcome. After all, we€™re talking about a woman with zero political experience buying her ticket via a ton of money earned off the back of the family business: a business which has experienced controversial news cycle after controversial news cycle for years, most of which have involved dead employees and accusations of a culture of illegal drugs. Making matters worse, there€™s her husband: a man who had been charged with providing anabolic steroids to his roster in 1993 and who€™d beaten the rap by the skin of his teeth; a man who€™d regularly displayed open contempt towards the federal government; a man who€™d voluntarily given evidence to a congressional committee after the Chris Benoit tragedy in 2007 about drug abuse in professional wrestling, and been so obstructive and cavalier in his responses that the transcripts read like a smug lawyered-up drug cartel head being brought in for questioning in a cheesy cop show. Yeah, there€™s no way any of that was going to be mentioned by the media during a campaign to be elected a US Senator. Apparently the first run at the Senate cost the McMahons $50million, and the second $47million. No wonder Vince looks so emotional and drained in her second concession speech€ backing his wife€™s failed political ambitions cost him a literal fortune.
