8 Times Shane McMahon Showed Up In WWE Just In Time To Make Things Worse
1. Deep-Sixing The European Championship – 1999
At first, the European Championship stood a chance of being a top prize in WWE, much like its Intercontinental Championship counterpart. After all, some serious competitors held the title, such as Triple H and Shawn Michaels. Heck, the first champion was The British Bulldog, and he defeated Owen Hart to claim the strap.
Unfortunately, it wasn't long before WWE decided to keep the European title tucked deep in the lower- and mid-cards. Granted, they were talented performers, names like X-Pac and D’Lo Brown did quite make viewers tune in to see the title defences.
Perhaps one of the biggest mistakes Vince McMahon and his cronies made was placing the strap on Shane McMahon. Considering he wasn’t regarded as a true professional wrestler, his reign as champ greatly tarnished any legacy the belt could have left.
The belt became so pointless during 1999 that McMahon decided to retire the belt to go down undefeated. Sadly, this meant he tucked the championship away in a gym bag and disregarded like an old high school trophy. One day Mideon found it… so Shane decided to just give it to him.
WWE would try to toss in a few legitimate performers such as Kurt Angle later on, but the championship was never the same and ultimately abandoned.
