8 Times The Rock's Wrestling Skills Eclipsed His Promo Abilities
4. The Rock Vs. Triple H - Judgment Day 2000
There was plenty of reason to question whether The Rock and Triple H could captivate an audience for the entire span of an Iron Man match. Neither was a traditional wrestler equipped with an arsenal of holds and counter-holds, nor had they ever been asked to go that long in their entire careers. Thus, doubts ran wild in the preamble to their Judgment Day 2000 match for the WWE Championship.
In one of the most surprisingly great matches in company history, Rock and Triple H had the audience on the edge of their seats, proving that one does not have to be a technician like Bret Hart or a dynamic performer like Shawn Michaels to be put in that position and succeed. The career-long rivals used timing, near-falls and outside elements like members of the McMahon-Helmsley Faction to tell a story that never wore out its welcome. In fact, the audience was as hot for the contest at its conclusion as it was at the beginning - a testament to the quality of both workers.
There will always be a line of thought among wrestling fans that Rock is a better talker than he ever was a wrestler but a so-so in-ring performer simply cannot deliver like this in such in a high-pressure situation. On that night, any doubts about the quality of worker he was, and any criticisms of his million dollar good looks and highly touted pedigree, went out the window.
