8 Times Wrestlers Were Rejected In Their Hometowns
2. Edge (SummerSlam 2004)
Fans may not have really wanted to boo 'The Rated "R" Superstar' during his most recent hit-and-miss run as a villain on WWE programming, but they certainly had no qualms about heckling a then-babyface Edge almost two decades earlier at SummerSlam 2004.
In fact, fans were so fed up with his increasingly stale babyface character, that not even his hometown of Toronto were prepared to cheer on the Ontario boy during his Intercontinental Championship defence against Batista and Chris Jericho.
Instead, despite an initially strong reception from those inside of the Scotiabank Arena, fans were eventually more interested in rallying behind Edge's fellow Canadian in the contest.
Every 'Y2J' chop and thump was met with an eruption of joy, whereas the champ's fiery responses had the Toronto natives threatening to riot. Hell, even Evolution's still somewhat green 'Animal' felt like a fan-favourite by comparison.
Rather than completely no-selling this evident rejection, though, a frustrated and slightly more aggressive Edge at least acknowledged the "bizarro world" reaction being sent his way. And after a brief spell on the sidelines in the aftermath, the wise call was made to give this clearly unwanted hero a nudge down the heel path towards the end of the year.
