8 Ups & 1 Down From Last Night's WWE SmackDown (July 17)

5. Fit For Purpose

Eric Young Kofi Kingston

Two nights removed from Sanity's victory over The New Day in a listless Extreme Rules tables match, Kofi Kingston met Eric Young in singles competition. It was solid, functional, and watchable, if unspectacular.

As one of the least interesting wrestlers on the roster, this is about the best we can expect from Eric Young. He's okay, and has good fundamentals, but aside from the occasional flash of charisma there has never been anything to separate him from typical midcard fodder. Kofi, on the other hand, is a hard-working, enthusiastic performer who enhances almost everything he's involved with, though him and EY weren't exactly going to drop a **** bout in nine minutes of TV time.

Nonetheless, they worked a textbook seesaw format with a handful of momentum swings. The other Sanity and New Day members got involved towards the end, too, with a big floor brawl erupting, allowing Killian Dain to throw Big E into Kingston, facilitating Young's victory. The feud keeps rolling on, and we'll likely get a variation on this formula next week.
