8 Wrestlers Cody Helped To Get Over In AEW
3. Eddie Kingston
Proof, should it be needed, that you can get over with fans even if you don’t go over your opponent. Kingston’s first match for AEW was a masterclass in grabbing the brass ring in a company where it actually makes a difference.
Again, “The Mad King” deserves every bit of credit for making the most of his opportunity but anyone doubting that Cody lent his full support should go back and read Kingston’s recent Players Tribune article.
In his own words, Eddie lays out just how generous, supportive and crucial Cody was that night. This isn’t just about letting Eddie powerbomb him onto thumbtacks either.
It was Cody’s idea that Kingston should walk out holding a mic and cutting a promo on the champion. It was a promo Eddie cut, ripping into Rhodes, that had caught AEW’s attention to begin with. That was part of a rant filmed at an outdoor mid-pandemic show to a tiny crowd. Presumably, Cody thought a similar tirade would work just as well on television.
His hunch was spot on. That attention-grabbing mic work did as much to get Kingston trending on Twitter as the match did.
