Eve Torres wrestled WWE Divas Champion Layla for the belt at Night of Champions 2012, even though she wasn't on the card at the start of the night. It was Kaitlyn, not Eve, who was supposed to challenge for the gold, but the NXT season three winner was attacked backstage, prompting General Manager Booker T to sub Torres in.

This was WWE's way of working around a notorious botch that saw Kaitlyn walk into the pay-per-view an accidental number one contender. The 20 August episode of Raw hosted a battle royal to determine Layla's challenger, with Eve the intended winner. A flubbed clothesline saw her accidentally land on the floor rather than the apron, however, leaving Kaitlyn as the sole survivor.

Kaitlyn understandably thought she was screwed, thinking "oh my God, I've f*cked everything up." A lambasting from the tempestuous WWE Chairman surely awaited, but no: Vince had popped himself daft while watching the botched spot.

McMahon was "laughing hysterically" when Kaitlyn got to the backstage area. He dug it, while those around him told her: "this is your opportunity. Take it."

Kaitlyn won her first (and only) Divas Championship just four months later.
