8 Wrestlers Who Worked Through Ridiculous Injuries

5. Bret Hart - Concussion

Seconds before going out for their WCW World Heavyweight Championship blow-off at Starrcade, Bret Hart related a very simple and patently obvious instruction to opponent Goldberg: "Bill, whatever you do, don't hurt me." In other words: be as crap as you like at wrestling, but make sure you're safe.

Apparently the green Goldberg failed to hear the veteran's request over the sound of his bombastic pyro. Just five minutes into the contest, he knocked Hart out with an elbow which The Hitman later described as like being hit with a "a brick inside a pillowcase". Less than a minute on, the uncoordinated challenger let his opponent's skull smash the floor as he failed to correctly cooperate during a ringpost figure four spot. Bret can be seen mouthing the word "f*ck!" - he recalled seeing "millions of stars" as his head bounced off the mat.

To finish the legend off once and for all, Goldberg infamously clocked Hart in the side of his head with a clumsy mule kick. Despite causing a nasty concussion which would ultimately draw the curtain on Bret's career, ever the pro, the champ stumbled on to the planned conclusion. It's hard to say whether his look of confusion following the screwy Roddy Piper finish was down to his lights being knocked out or WCW's baffling booking.

Benjamin was born in 1987, and is still not dead. He variously enjoys classical music, old-school adventure games (they're not dead), and walks on the beach (albeit short - asthma, you know). He's currently trying to compile a comprehensive history of video game music, yet denies accusations that he purposefully targets niche audiences. He's often wrong about these things.
