8 WWE Champions Who Revived A Dying Title
3. John Cena - United States Championship
WrestleMania 31 was an interesting event for WWE.
Sting made his hugely anticipated WWE in-ring debut 14 years after WCW closed; Ronda Rousey got physical and laid the foundation for years of gossip to follow; and the main event saw the WWE World Heavyweight Championship go to Seth Rollins in a bout he originally wasn't even in. All in all, a pretty noteworthy PPV.
The secondary championships were also given to two huge main event names - Daniel Bryan winning the Intercontinental and Cena winning the United States - with the hopes of rejuvenating both titles post-'Mania. Sadly, Bryan got injured shortly after and was forced to relinquish his gold; however, Cena executed his end of the bargain to perfection.
With Cena as US Champ, the title gained instant credibility. Incredibly, the belt seemed to reciprocate and the US Title also rejuvenated Cena. After initiating the "US Open Challenge" - a weekly mystery opponent concept - 'Big Match John' went on to have some of the best bouts of his career.
Locking horns with the likes of Sami Zayn and Cesaro, Cena faced all comers, regardless of style, and also went on to make Kevin Owens a star in the process.
The US Title quickly became main event calibre and was a must-see part of Raw every week during this time.
