William Regal hasn't wrestled a full-time schedule in many a year, winding down due to injuries and transitioning into a role at the WWE Performance Center and as the on-screen General Manager of NXT. For a few years, though, he worked select house shows and the odd match on programmes like Superstars or Main Event, keeping himself in good enough shape so that he could still step into the ring when the occasion called for it.

The occasion called for it in December 2013, with the Blackpool, England native set to square off with the up-and-coming Cesaro, a man Regal had tangled with before in the past. This was, to date, Regal's last ever televised professional match.

If that remains the case - and it looks to be, considering Regal's recent neck surgery and whatnot - then it's a hell of a way to go out. Regal has always had a quote/unquote unorthodox style and that was on full display here, in a match that had a great throwback feel to it.

A good old-fashioned chess match, the battling Brit and the Swiss Superman fought over every hold, be it a knuckle lock, a wristlock or a cravat, making everything mean something. This was the master teaching a very able student, unleashing some snug uppercuts as a way of saying 'good job'.

The contest was gripping and had a slow build, with the crowd getting more and more invested as Regal got more and more desperate, pulling out everything he had left but just not having enough to compete with a superior, younger competitor. Wonderful stuff, this.

I hope Sir Regal is showing tapes of this one to prospective WWE superstars down in Orlando.
