If it isn't the Golden Era of British Wrestling for Sabre then it has to be the early 1990s and Japan's Junior Heavyweight scene. The Super J Cup was the grandaddy of Japanese junior wrestling back in the day, and New Japan Pro Wrestling hosted the first tournament way back in 1994.

The tournament has gone down in history for the sheer quality of the matches, and even the most cursory glance at the tournament bracket impresses through sheer quality of names. Wild Pegasus (Chris Benoit) would go on to win the whole thing, but Eddie Guerrero, Gedo, Taka Michinoku, The Great Sasuke, Hayabusa, Jushin Thunder Liger and this writer's favourite Dean Malenko fell by the wayside beforehand.

The 1994 Super J Cup has been confirmed as a big influence on Sabre in interviews gone by. It would have a great influence on the young boy as he grew into a man, in particular his career choices.

Born in the middle of Wales in the middle of the 1980's, John can't quite remember when he started watching wrestling but he has a terrible feeling that Dino Bravo was involved. Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man. He is the author of 'An Illustrated History of Slavic Misery', the best book about the Slavic people that you haven't yet read. You can get that and others from www.poshlostbooks.com.
