9 Times Triple H Stole The Spotlight
4. SummerSlam 2003
Much like at WrestleMania XIX with Booker T, SummerSlam 2003 should have been Goldberg’s crowning moment in sealing the World Heavyweight Championship. Again, that moment never arrived though, and again it was Triple H who stole the thunder.
Four months after debuting in WWE, Goldberg was heading into SummerSlam on a roll. And his momentum was showing no signs of slowing up when he entered the fray in the Elimination Chamber main event for Triple H’s world title.
As the final man to leave his pod, Goldberg made an immediate impact, eliminating Randy Orton right off the bat before pinning both Shawn Michaels and Chris Jericho to set up a showdown with the incumbent champion.
Everything pointed towards the former WCW man pulling off a clean sweep, but after a few minutes in the ring with 'the Game', an out-of-the-blue sledgehammer shot to the back of the head had Goldberg out cold, allowing the champ to retain his title.
Just as the Rock did after WrestleMania 2000, Goldberg would indeed win the title at the following PPV, but again that doesn’t change the fact that SummerSlam was the stage on which he—not Triple H—should’ve come up trumps.
