9 Ups & 2 Downs From IMPACT Wrestling (23 Sep)
4. Alexander Marches Forward
Last night was an important one for Josh Alexander, as the 'Walking Weapon' defeated Ace Austin in an enthralling main event contest, just days after declaring his right for a World Title opportunity at Bound For Glory.
Every aspect of the match was on point. Josh's strikes were meticulous, wearing Ace down gradually rather than throwing everything at him at once. He went for the ankle lock early on, for example, showing both how many weapons he has at his disposal and also how quick the pace of the match can change in his favour. The now-former X Division Champion benefitted from Matt Striker and D'Lo Brown's comments; they questioned if he could wrestle his usual style when he faces Christian Cage. It's an intriguing query, and one that warrants the story depth.
Ace was solid as card fodder for Josh, as he always is. He excels in any role provided to him by IMPACT. Though he was tantalising at points - his spin kick that knocked Josh from the apron to a bent-over Madman Fulton at ringside was subtly brilliant - this was about putting Josh over as a World Title challenger. He ate a C4Spike as gorgeously as he often does. Credit where credit's due for Ace Austin.
