9 Ups & 3 Downs From IMPACT Wrestling (27 May)
2. Guess Who's Back
Filling in for Matt Striker on commentary this week was Josh Mathews. In short, he hasn’t been missed from the announce booth.
It would have helped if he’d actually gotten better at the job, but alas, he hasn’t. That’s not to say he’s not good at commentating – it’s just he makes too many unnecessary comments, doesn’t focus on certain parts of the match, and is just generally an annoyance.
In the knockouts tag team match, for example, he mentioned how Kimber Lee, Susan, Kiera Hogan, and Tasha Steelz were brawling at ringside, but failed to mention how they were part of the same team. His job is to let people realise how interesting it is that there’s been a specific development, especially one like this. It was noteworthy, and could lead to something more. You’d never know, though.
We’ll touch upon it in just a bit, but Josh was unbearable at the end of Decay vs. Johnny Swinger and Hernandez. If a wrestler doesn’t hit their move properly, don’t sugercoat it. Mention that they’ve not done it like they usually do, rather than say it’s fine.
Fingers crossed this is a one-off.
