9 Ups & 4 Downs From Impact Wrestling Turning Point 2020
4. Family Is Everything
There's no shortage in history between Sami Callihan and Rich Swann, and so to have that be brought up once more for their World Championship match was excellent. Their X Division Championship rivalry last spring was nothing short of spectacular, but they needed that extra boost to push them up to that main event quality level.
Just watching 'The Draw' wear an opponent down through any means necessary is always a joy to watch. He tends to adapt his arsenal depending on who it is he's facing, and since he was against the likes of Rich Swann here, he opted to keep him grounded at all costs. Seeing Sami taunting the champion throughout, telling him to take a free shot, all added together perfectly to tell the story that didn't even need to be told.
The ending of the match is where things got interesting, with Eddie Edwards preventing a Ken Shamrock run-in, before Swann kicked the head off Sami's shoulders five times in a row to continue his title reign. While he does tend to fly around the ring like the best of them, that's not to say Rich isn't also a dangerous striker. Just one of those kicks would have won him the match had it not been Sami Callihan he was against.
Swann and Callihan's Rebellion bout from April 2019 was a tad better than this one. However, bear in mind that was a weapons-based contest. Adding weapons to a Sami Callihan match always gives it an edge over a normal Sami Callihan match. In saying that, though, it doesn't reflect in any way on the quality of their Turning Point showdown. Any time these two can lock horns guarantees a sensational time for the viewer. They just have that level of chemistry.
