Another year is almost in the bag for WWE, but the professional wrestling train never stops. Raw is the longest running weekly episodic show in the history of time and space (or whatever it is that Michael Cole is so fond of saying) for good reason, and the old adage about there being no off-season in WWE becomes ever truer at this time of year.

Certain superstars will look back at their 2016 with pride, others less so. It was as newsworthy a year as one can remember, with the return of the brand split and multiple new championships added along the way. In short, it has been one heck of a year.

Even so, it is what you do next that counts. Just because 2016 was a grand success doesn't mean 2017 will continue in the same vein, and the opposite is also true. If you've had a stinker of a 2016, 2017 is your year to turn all of that around.

But for a small core of WWE superstars, 2017 is going to be the most important year of their careers to date. Time brings experience brings responsibility, and these men and women need to step up big time in January.

Here are 9 superstars for whom 2017 may well be make or break.

Born in the middle of Wales in the middle of the 1980's, John can't quite remember when he started watching wrestling but he has a terrible feeling that Dino Bravo was involved. Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man. He is the author of 'An Illustrated History of Slavic Misery', the best book about the Slavic people that you haven't yet read. You can get that and others from www.poshlostbooks.com.
