Though yet to commence as of writing, the Mae Young Classic has just about guaranteed itself a position as the most talked-about women's wrestling event of the year, with a number of huge names from the North American and UK independent scenes and Japan coming on board for the 32-woman single elimination tournament.

Of the field, World Wonder Ring Stardom standout Kairi Sane has been considered a favourite, and may not only go all the way in the tournament, but also provide a healthy challenge for Asuka's title at November's TakeOver event.

Sane (formerly Kairi Hojo) was considered one of the very best women's wrestlers in the world, so much so that discerning supporters have already made claims of her superiority against the 'Empress of Tomorrow'. Such high praise won't have gone unheard by the NXT Champion.

Should Sane not be successful, there are high hopes for Shayna Baszler, Candice LeRae, Piper Niven and Toni Storm to stand out in the event. Of the vast field, they're all expected to do particularly well, and could equally carry forward the momentum of a huge tournament victory into action against the battle-worn titleholder.
