Backstage Update On AEW’s Plans For Kenny Omega
Get ready for the Cleaner's monster push.
As if it wasn’t already clear from this week’s episode of Dynamite, AEW plans on pushing Kenny Omega as a considerable singles star going forward.
This is according to Dave Meltzer. Speaking on a recent episode of Wrestling Observer Radio, he said that the promotion had always planned on keeping ‘The Best Bout Machine’ as a relative secondary figure in year one, using him to put others over and work alongside Hangman Page in the tag division. Year two, however, was when he’d level up, slide into a singles spotlight, and take off.
The most recent episode of Dynamite framed Omega as a megastar. Ring announcer Justin Roberts ran through a lengthy list of accolades as part of an extended ring entrance featuring dancing girls and new music, before ‘Battle Cry’ hit and Kenny squashed Sonny Kiss in just two moves. This change in presentation, coupled with the increased ‘Cleaner’ teases, hinted that something big was on the horizon for the Canadian.
Meltzer’s comments are in-line with those of Matt Jackson, who recently named Omega as one of the wrestlers likeliest to take off in year two of AEW.
