WWE's top prize has had a turbulent 2017. Royal Rumble, Elimination Chamber, WrestleMania, and Backlash. Four times the WWE Championship has been on the line on PPV. Each time, SmackDown has crowned a new World Champion.

Cena, Wyatt, and Orton combined for just over 100 days as champion, not nearly long enough for any of those three guys to build a significant title reign. Each run had upside: Cena's began with a classic against Styles in the Alamodome; Wyatt's fans got the satisfaction of seeing him get that elusive title win; and Orton's reign brought us the legacy-defining House of Horrors match.

What makes these worthless title reigns so damaging is the belt that has passed between them. The WWE Championship is something that wrestlers pursue their entire careers, many of whom never come even remotely close to attaining it. To win the belt, only to do nothing until you drop it, makes the WWE Championship feel less like the keys to the kingdom, and more like a glorified participation prize.

Where have these utterly trash title runs led us? Jinder Mahal is WWE Champion.
