Brock Lesnar Receives One Year Suspension From NSAC
And a quarter million dollar fine!
The fallout from UFC 200 for Brock Lesnar has finally arrived.
In a deal confirmed today, Lesnar has accepted a one year suspension by the Nevada State Athletic Commission following both in and out of competition drug test failures for hydroxy-clomiphene, an estrogen blocker on the banned substances list.
In addition to the suspension, retroactive to July, Lesnar has been fined $250,000. His fight at UFC 200, originally a win against veteran striker Mark Hunt, has been changed to a No Contest.
For Lesnar, who had previously requested his B-sample be tested and stated that he would "get to the bottom" of what happened, it's a sombre end to what had been the story of UFC 200. The failure was eventually blamed on a foot cream, though whether any evidence of tainting was found remains unclear.
Lesnar looked cool and calculated at UFC 200 against a frankly scary Hunt after years away from the sport. However, just days after his big victory, the rug was pulled out from under him with the news of not one but two test failures. To make matters worse for the UFC, star light heavyweight Jon Jones also failed a drug test leading up to the event, for two substances, including hydroxy-clomiphene.
Jones' test came back in time to pull him from the card, however drug testing body USADA did not have Lesnar's results in time, and he was therefore allowed to compete. His opponent, Mark Hunt, was infuriated by the failure and demanded that Lesnar's purse be paid to him in full. He has since retained a lawyer.
At 39 years of age, this doesn't quite close the door on MMA for Lesnar. He could return to action next Summer if he chose to - many of the UFC's top heavyweights compete into their 40s. He may wish to pick up one last win in the sport, given his victory over Hunt no longer stands. In the meantime, this should have no impact on his ability to perform for the WWE.
