Edge Confirms He Was Set To Face Randy Orton At WrestleMania 37 Before Injury

Had Edge not got injured, it looks like a Randy Orton trilogy would've concluded at 'Mania 37.

Edge was originally planning to take on Randy Orton at WrestleMania 37, however his tricep injury ultimately derailed those plans.

Whilst speaking to TalkSport recently to hype up his match against Daniel Bryan and Roman Reigns at tonight's Night 2 of 'Mania 37, the Rated 'R' Superstar explained that the plan was once for him to go to war with his fierce old rival at this year's Show of Shows. That was until the eventual 2021 Men's Royal Rumble winner tore his tricep in the pair's 'Greatest Wrestling Match Ever' at Backlash in June. Said injury led to a change in direction for the company, leaving the two's trilogy up in the air.

In the star's own words:

“It seemed to change everything,” Edge started. “In my mind I still thought ‘Me and Randy at WrestleMania. Me and Randy at WrestleMania. Me and Randy at WrestleMania.’ That’s what my working plan was the entire time, until I was told it wasn’t the company’s plan.
“Then I went ‘Oh, OK. But, we got to see this trilogy through? We need to do this.’ And I was pretty disappointed. I just felt like the story deserved that (to be seen through). So when I found out that wasn’t on the docket anymore, I was like so then what?! And so it’s worked out the way it has, which is obviously very exciting."

Edge would later go on to admit that the way his current 'Mania storyline has aligned with significant anniversaries in his career and the fact all three men involved were once told they'd not be allowed to perform in a ring anymore eventually made for a tale too perfect not to tell:

“So, a lot changed, it did! A lot of it was timing and a lot of it was I come back and the Rumble takes place 11 years to the day from the last time I won the Rumble, then the second night of WrestleMania is 10 years to the day from when I announced my retirement.
“You can’t write that stuff! So when you see that it’s like I guess that’s the direction we gotta go, right? Because that only happens once. You only get this opportunity to tell this story once.
“So I think that’s a really fun aspect, let alone the aspect where you have three guys in the main event that have been told they got to go home or that they can’t do this anymore, and yet, here we are.”

All three will go to war in just a matter of hours over the Universal Championship in what is no doubt set to be the show-closer for the second part of this two-night 'Mania 37 spectacular.

Will Edge be able to reclaim the World Championship he never lost on the Grandest Stage? Can Daniel Bryan pull off the unthinkable once again? Or will both men have no choice but to acknowledge the Tribal Chief as the Head of the Table? It's safe to say, we all cannot wait to find out.
