Double Or Nothing 2023 centred around the "four pillars" AEW World Championship match, but that was a deeply flawed logic in 2023. After three years of AEW as a weekly televised promotion, nobody would be making the case for Sammy Guevara and 'Jungle Boy' Jack Perry to be cornerstones of the company, and so MJF putting his AEW World Championship on the line against these two and Darby Allin felt out of touch at best and smugly self-satisfied at worst

MJF predictably retained his title, but that was far from the most egregious thing to happen at the PPV. Jade Cargill lost her undefeated streak and the TBS Championship in ridiculous fashion. After successfully defending her title against Taya Valkyrie, she inexplicably offered an open challenge to the women's locker room. Kris Statlander returned to answer the call after several months out injured and beat Cargill in less than a minute to not only kill Cargill's streak, but also gave Statlander her first AEW title in unsatisfactory circumstances.

Toni Storm was stuck in the nauseating Outcasts storyline about flattening AEW originals, and she defeated a heavily injured Jamie Hayter to win the AEW Women's Championship, and Adam Cole beat Chris Jericho in an unsanctioned match that neither man will look back on fondly. The Blackpool Combat Club vs Elite Anarchy In The Arena match still brought some life to the evening, with The Elite standing tall thanks to a Don Callis-assisted heel turn from Konosuke Takeshita.
