Every NXT TakeOver Main Event In History: Ranked
3. Johnny Gargano Vs. Andrade 'Cien' Almas - Takeover: Philadelphia
It can be argued that this match marks the spot in history when NXT really started to take off. It was already amazing, but this is when the five-star making machine kicked into high gear and it felt like every second match became a Match of the Year candidate.
For just over thirty minutes, neither man slowed down once, constantly working at top speed, keeping the crowd on the edge of their seat thinking the finish would come at any second. Not only was it NXT’s reinvigoration, but it was the beginning of a career renaissance for Almas, proving once and for all that he could be a top guy anywhere in the world with his high-flying prowess and crisp chain wrestling ability. Gargano was as classy as ever, making you believe with every late kick out that he was never going to die and take the title home.
Having the Ciampa return happen after the match was a godsend, as a clean win made Almas look even stronger in the process. Overall, not only did Gargano help create a new megastar in Almas, plus help kickstart a new era of momentum in NXT, but he and Ciampa had successfully written another chapter in their never-ending story. Bravo all around.
