The fact that Johnny Gargano has appeared on this list a total of nine times is a testament to how much confidence NXT rightly has in ‘Mr Takeover’ to continually put him on last. However, it is an even bigger testament to the man’s talent levels that six of those nine falls within the top ten. He truly is one of the modern greats.
That aside, he was once more at his babyface best when he stood across the ring from Adam Cole, fighting over the vacant NXT Title in front of a red-hot Brooklyn crowd. These two just know how to wrestle each other, stunning the wrestling world with three outstanding mini-matches with each of the three falls. It was like a roller coaster, with the action going up and down, side to side and all over the place in all the best ways. Athletic sequences, innovative counters and dramatic storytelling are just some of the ways to describe this almost indescribable contest.
The moment when Gargano got the win and finally lifted the title after such a long run of playing second fiddle was the most intensely cathartic in wrestling since Daniel Bryan’s WrestleMania XXX triumph.
