More of a angle than a match, the Bayley/Charlotte Flair contest was the first of several disappointing matches the two would have over the SmackDown women's title in 2019.

While the heel turn of Bayley was great in theory and would eventually result in a refreshing character change, her early work in the ring involved her being extremely cheap and erratic in the ring. Her offence lacked any substantive weight for months, and she would play into a lot of the worst tropes of a heel champion without redefining her moveset.

This match in particular was benefited by the immediacy and shock of Bayley’s turn, with fans wondering how a heel Bayley would work on PPV against a talent like Charlotte Flair.

Unfortunately it was incredibly short, was almost entirely Charlotte beating the hell out of Bayley, and was built on a cheap heel finish that made both women look worse. It was over before it really began and belonged on an episode of SmackDown more than a PPV.

The two women had major chemistry back in 2017. It’s a shame that the situation at the time didn’t allow them to elevate each other and the belt in the process.
