Goldberg Says Bron Breakker Is The Only WWE Star Allowed To Use The Spear (WWE News)
Awkward conversations incoming with WWE stars like Roman Reigns and Charlotte Flair!
Soon-to-retire legend Bill Goldberg could have a few tasty chats coming up with the likes of Roman Reigns, Charlotte Flair and even Jey Uso soon. The ex-WCW main man told CBS Sports that he's personally handpicked Bron Breakker as the only human being in WWE [who] should be doing [the spear]".
The spear has been closely tied to Goldberg since he burst onto the scene on WCW Monday Nitro as a squash match-winning machine back in 1997. That move typically fed into his finishing Jackhammer, and it had sold out crowds leaping up our of their seats or punching the air in delight as it claimed another victim. That story continued on and off in WWE between 2003-present day.
Bill gave credit to 'Dr. Death' Steve Williams as the guy who deployed the spear best before he came around, but Goldberg does believe that WWE stars only began using it to "make mine look bad or downplay it". He's entitled to his opinion, of course, but Adam 'Edge/Cope' Copeland might have something to say about that - he used the spear to tremendous effect for years as a main eventer, and there's no doubt the finisher contributed hugely to his own success.
That probably wasn't a knock on Bill Goldberg, let's be honest.
Breakker's spear is staggering though. His combination of speed and power before sticking the landing has become a regular highlight on episodes of Raw in recent times. Bron even went viral for smashing streamer IShowSpeed with one back at February's Royal Rumble.
Goldberg thinks Breakker should own the spear exclusively once he retires.
Goldberg Set For Retirement Bow This Weekend
There's a solid chance that Goldberg will wrestle his final match ever (at least for WWE) this coming weekend against wrestling machine Gunther. The pair are scheduled to clash on the latest Saturday Night's Main Event card in Atlanta's State Farm Arena on 12 July. What's more, Gunther's World Heavyweight Championship is on the line.
Realistically, there's zero call for Triple H pulling a Vince McMahon by putting one of his top belts on Goldberg. This is 2025, not 2005, and that ship has sailed. However, fan response to Goldberg getting right up in Gunther's face on this past Monday's edition of Raw should be considered very promising by WWE's creative team. They've popped Bill in this spot for a reason.
He's still over as a part-time attraction with the wider casual wrestling audience.
Pre-Monday, Gunther has had to do a lot of the heavy lifting in order to build the bout properly. Come SNME, he'll step into the ring for a surely-bruising encounter against someone who's best-used in shorter, power-based matches. It's safe to assume that Gunther won't have to put in a 20-30 minute shift in Georgia then!
The curtain comes down on a true wrestling phenomenon. More recent matches haven't been exactly kind to Goldberg's legacy, but he was a real force when he first showed up in the late-1990s.
