Emanating from Washington, D.C.'s sold-out Capital One Arena, the 42nd edition of Saturday Night's Main Event will go down in the history books, as John Cena brings an end to one of the all-time great pro wrestling careers.

Having announced last year that 2025 would be his last as an in-ring talent, the year has certainly been a mixed one for Cena, going from one of the most shocking heel turns in history, to winning a record-setting 17th World Championship at WrestleMania 41, to a largely fumbled heel run, to a much-demanded return to babyface territory, to a major upturn in match quality, and even a cheeky Intercontinental Title win to round the year out and finally make Big Match John a Grand Slam Champion.

Across the ring from John Cena, it's the Ring General, Gunther, who'll be standing tall and looking to send the 48-year-old icon into retirement with a loss. As soon as it became clear who the participants were in The Last Time Is Now Tournament to earn that spot as Cena's final opponent, the big Austrian immediately became the clear favourite to smash through the pack, and that's exactly what happened, with the former two-time World Heavyweight Champion defeating Je'Von Evans, Carmelo Hayes, Solo Sikoa, and LA Knight on his way to Saturday Night's Main Event. And away from any sort of storyline aspect, Gunther is the man best tasked with giving Cena the sort of send-off match that his career so very much deserves, as the one-time Walter has long been one of the industry's truly elite workers.

WWE Saturday Night's Main Event AJ Styles Dragon Lee Je'Von Evans Leon Slater
WWE

Away from the clear headline attraction of Cena vs. Gunther, the rest of the Saturday Night's Main Event line-up consists of matches pitting the stars of today against the stars of tomorrow.

Added on the Raw before SNME, we now have the hugely exciting prospect of WWE World Tag Team Champions AJ Styles and Dragon Lee facing arguably the two hottest prospects in the business right now, NXT's Je'Von Evans and TNA X Division Champion Leon Slater, in a non-title match. As singles stars, Evans and Slater - who are scarily both still only 21 years of age - have become two of the most electric, energetic, high-flying wrestlers in the world, and in the handful of times they've teamed together, they've meshed incredibly well as a must-see all-action tandem. Of course, AJ Styles was and is a revolutionary, game-changing star when it comes to that sort of style, and the veteran still has plenty of tricks up his sleeve as he himself eyes his own retirement from the ring next year. Then there's Dragon Lee, who's now finally getting a regular chance on Raw to show why he's also considered one of the world's premier high-flyers. Simply put, this tag team match has the potential to be something truly special and steal the whole show.

NXT Deadline 2025 Oba Femi Ricky Saints
WWE

Pitting champion against champion, again in a non-title setting, WWE Champion Cody Rhodes will face new NXT Champion Oba Femi in a bout that promises to be a lot of fun, with the battling babyface Rhodes squaring off with the all-powerful Ruler of NXT. Oba earned himself this opportunity after somewhat surprisingly beating Ricky Saints at NXT Deadline last weekend to become a two-time NXT Champion, and it's only a matter of time before Femi finds himself rubbing shoulders with stars like the American Nightmare on the main roster on a more regular basis. Given the ongoing issues between Cody Rhodes and Drew McIntyre, though, don't rule out an appearance from the Scottish Warrior here...

Rounding out the current Saturday Night's Main Event line-up, we've got one of NXT's greatest ever stars, Bayley, reaching down to pull up one of the brand's can't-miss stars of tomorrow, Sol Ruca. Much like John Cena is constantly about giving back to the business and giving opportunities to up-and-comers on the rise, Bayley has that same mentality, as shown by her recently running - and funding - the first all-women, two-day Lodestone training camp, where she brought in several WWE names, including Cena, to help carve the path for prospects from the independent scene. And in Sol Ruca, much like Oba Femi, we've somebody who could realistically be dropped onto Raw or SmackDown tomorrow and not feel out of place, as shown by the matches she's already wrestled on the main roster.

Currently a four-match card, it may well be that another match or two is added before bell time gets here on Saturday, as the wrestling world gets ready to say farewell to one of the greatest to ever do it.
