“WWE, in 2019, just resuscitated the Bray Wyatt character over the course of a single segment.”
Those three statements were all patently, equally absurd as of Sunday, April 21, 2019. On Monday, April 22, WWE just resuscitated the Bray Wyatt character over the course of a single segment.
This was incredible stuff, both in itself and in its inexplicable success.
A burst of vibrant primary colours swooshed over the screen deep into RAW’s world of three-hour beige, removing us from mundane reality and transporting us into a dissociative Day-Glo nightmare. A wholesome voice sang the words “We’re really glad that you’re our friend / And this is a friendship that’ll never, ever end.”
This was shocking even before our shocking protagonist revealed himself—but even in that splash of pure childhood whimsy, a sinister undercurrent threatened to surface. In addition to a smiling bunny rabbit, we saw also a veiled, black-haired gothic doll at odds with the twee aesthetic. Next to her: a cartoon buzzard, a bird of prey. The lyrics to that upbeat ditty were unnerving, too. “Never, ever end…”
