Is Britt Baker on her way to WWE?

Is Britt Baker set to imminently swap AEW for WWE? Well, that depends on who you believe.

Speaking on his Behind the Turnbuckle podcast, Jonathan Coachman indicated that Britt is "this close" to signing with WWE. As Coachman put it, D.M.D. is "gone from AEW", adding how "she got buried because she pushed back" and "spoke up about what was going on".

In terms of her presence in AEW, Britt Baker has not wrestled for the promotion since a November win over Penelope Ford. That would be the one and the same contest where, post-match, Baker said "nobody cares" several times into the camera when she was confronted by Serena Deeb.

Since then, reports soon surfaced that said Tony Khan was "fed up" with Britt and that all creative plans for her had been dropped. This in itself came not too long after the former AEW Women's Champion was suspended last August following a backstage altercation with Alicia Atout and MJF.

While Britt Baker's seven-month absence from AEW programming speaks volumes, that doesn't necessarily mean that she's WWE-bound. At least, not any time soon.

On this topic, Fightful Select moved to play down Coachman's latest claim, pointing out that Britt Baker is still under contract with AEW and has not left the promotion. In fact, Fightful states that the Role Model signed a five-year contract in late 2021, meaning, bar any changes, Britt will be tied to AEW until late 2026. An agreement could always be made for Baker to exit the company before that time, but as of now, the Pittsburgh native seemingly isn't going anywhere.

Further, a WWE source reached out to Fightful to detail how Britt Baker was always a "welcome face" whenever she'd visited WWE over the years, such as those times when she'd be in attendance for certain shows her then-partner Adam Cole was on, but they have not discussed her coming to WWE in more recent times.

Could Britt Baker End Up In WWE?

From the outside looking in, it does feel a little like this situation is one of those where Britt Baker is simply running down her days with AEW.

At one point one of the biggest, most popular stars in the promotion, it seems that the relationship between Baker and AEW has soured in recent years. A fit and healthy Britt being off TV for seven months would have been unthinkable in years gone by, such was her star power and sheer presence. However, things can always change, and things clearly have changed.

In terms of the overall package of in-ring work, promo, and a connection to the audience, Britt Baker still obviously has all the tools to be a major player for AEW. For whatever reason, though, she's spent the past seven months on the sidelines, all as speculation runs wild over her future - particularly when Baker removed all mention of AEW from her social media accounts earlier this year.

As mentioned, Britt is purportedly still under contract with AEW until late 2026, meaning any chance of a jump to WWE is currently off the table. That is, unless she is able to secure her release or if AEW decides to fire her.

Previously, a prolonged absence from AEW TV has ultimately resulted in a talent eventually heading for the AEW exit door. As examples of that, you need just look at the likes of Ricky Starks, Miro, Malakai Black, and the Lucha Bros. In those cases, the talent was held off TV once it became apparent that they might be weighing up a future away from AEW. Most recently, Mariah May is another who was completely removed from TV, directly off the back of one of the hottest storylines and rivalries in company history, once it became clear that she was looking to sign with WWE rather than re-sign with AEW once her existing deal was up. Of course, Mariah has since turned up in NXT as Blake Monroe.
