Currently held by: Wes Lee.

Much like the Intercontinental Championship has often been touted as for the main roster, the NXT North American Championship has been the go-to workhorse championship for the brand, held by the likes of Johnny Gargano, Ricochet, and Adam Cole throughout its nearly five-year history. Wes Lee now stands as the representative of the brand, lifting the vacant strap at October’s Halloween Havoc special.

Predicted next champion: JD McDonagh.

Really, the championship could go to multiple NXT performers. Charlie Dempsey would make a suitable champion, with the timing of William Regal’s WWE return making him a likely candidate. Axiom, the former A-Kid, could be a superb mid-card champion, as evidenced by his run with the NXT UK Heritage Cup. Failing this, a return to Carmelo Hayes as champion stands as a good shout. Dragon Lee, the first major signing to WWE from the independent circuit in some time, would be outstanding.

But JD McDonagh may be where WWE moves next.

The former Jordan Devlin was surprisingly chosen to lift the Cruiserweight Championship in January 2020, ultimately being replaced by a series of interim champions while he was unable to travel due to the pandemic. Now a full-time NXT staffer, he epitomises the title of NXT North American Champion just as much as Wes Lee currently does, if not more.
