NXT's tag team division was its Achilles heel in the first few years of the brand's development, but once tandems such as Enzo Amore and Big Cass, The Vaudevillians, and The Lucha Dragons rose in the ranks, it became a much more prominent fixture in the promotion.

That said, American Alpha and The Revival deserve all the credit in the world for showing just how fun tag team wrestling can be with the stellar series of matches they had over the course of 2016. Their first outing at TakeOver: Dallas saw Alpha capture the NXT Tag Team Championship while the rematch ended with Revival taking the titles back.

As such, a rubber match was necessary.

A 2-out-of-3 Falls stipulation seemed to be the best bout they could have competed in given their phenomenal in-ring chemistry and ability to ignite an audience. Similar to Sami Zayn vs. Samoa Joe, they spent time telling a story with the first two falls as the heels worked on the injured leg of Jason Jordan and Alpha showed incredible cohesiveness by doing everything almost in unison.

But that aforementioned injury suffered by Jordan was what cost them in the end, and with one last beautifully-executed Shatter Machine, Revival were able to put their adversaries away once and for all.
