“This is my yard now.”

That was how Roman Reigns opened the Raw after WrestleMania 33 to deafening boos having defeated (and presumably retired) The Undertaker 24 hours before.

The battle over 'whose yard' the WWE ring was closed the 2017 edition of 'Mania, and it was another embarrassment of a match for both men. For Roman, this was his third consecutive WrestleMania main event, and fans had booed heavily throughout each of them. He simply spammed his finishers and signatures, mixing those in with a bunch of chair shots as well because this was a 'No Holds Barred' match.

For 'Taker, who like Triple H the year before was winding down his in-ring career with increasingly slower, plodding matches, this was not the sendoff he could have envisioned. They botched a Tombstone reversal sequence and relied on weapons shots and spamming finishers to try to get a reaction, but all the crowd feedback was negative. These were indeed dark days of Vince McMahon-pilled 'Manias where fans were going to get Roman in bland main events whether they liked it or not.

Afterwards, Undertaker seemingly retired after leaving his gear in the ring, but he’d return the following year. Reigns would kick off a feud with Braun Strowman where the menacing, ambulance-tipping villain was the clear babyface in fans’ eyes.
