Ranking Every WWE Money In The Bank Winner’s Run With The Briefcase
1. Edge, 2005
It’s always difficult to beat the original, and that’s pretty much the case when it comes to the Mr. Money in the Bank moniker. Not only was Edge the first to win the briefcase, but he also held onto it longer than anyone else, winning it at WrestleMania 22 and biding his time for 280 days before going after John Cena’s WWE Championship.
During those months, Edge came up trumps in feuds with Chris Benoit, Kane and most notably Matt Hardy, who was forced off TV after losing to Edge in a Loser Leaves Raw match in which the Money in the Bank briefcase was also on the line.
But perhaps the best thing about Edge’s run was that nobody was entirely sure how exactly he’d cash in, with that novelty factor making his moment all the more special when it finally did arrive at the 2006 New Year’s Revolution PPV.
With Cena beaten and bloodied after retaining his title in an Elimination Chamber match, Vince McMahon emerged to announce Edge was cashing in his Money in the Bank privilege. Further drama was then teased when Cena kicked out of Edge’s first Spear, but a second one kept him down for the count and saw the crowning of a brand-new champion of the world.
All in all, it made for a very well-orchestrated run and a great one with which to launch the Money in the Bank concept.
