Real Reason WWE No-Sold 'Eye For An Eye' Stipulation At Extreme Rules 2020

At ‘The Horror Show At Extreme Rules', Seth Rollins defeated Rey Mysterio in the much-ridiculed ‘Eye For An Eye’ match.

This result of course meant that Rollins “extracted” the eyeball from Rey’s socket. He did so by stabbing it against the steel ring steps, and while initial appearances made it seem like they had asked the viewer to imagine the graphic scene in the theatre of their mind, the cheap seats theatre of WWE did spring for a prosthetic eyeball. It looked like it belonged on a snooker table.

"It's out," said Samoa Joe, quietly and matter of fact, as if one of his commentary colleagues was flying low, and a profoundly respected peer hadn't just suffered - ostensibly - the most gruesome in-ring injury ever seen in a professional wrestling ring.

Rey was rushed backstage, and after being tended to by medical personnel, Charly Caruso advised the audience of a miracle, which was later reported by WWE.com:

"Mysterio was rushed to a local medical facility to be treated for a potential globe luxation. Medical experts were optimistic that if the optic nerve is not severed and there is not too much strain on the blood vessels and nerves that connect the eye to the rest of the head, there’s a chance Mysterio can maintain his vision."

Translated, by Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer:

"Rey Mysterio has not signed. My gut, as it's been all along, is that he will, but it has not happened yet. The reason that they gave for that open-ended thing, "we might save his eye", is that if he does sign, that's their out."
