Rebooking WWE SummerSlam 2003: 7 Ways To Make It Better
6. The World's Greatest Tag Team Vs. The Dudley Boys - Tables Match
It's hard to imagine but, in 2003, there was rarely, if ever, any Smackdown versus Raw conflict. The brand extension was but a year and a half old at this point and clearly the powers-that-be were saving the battle of the brands for further down the line. It wouldn't have hurt to give fans a teaser at a big event like SummerSlam. The Dudley Boys opened the PPV against La Resistance, in what was a poor match. How the overpushed Frenchmen got a spot on the show, and talented amateur standouts Haas and Benjamin didn't, is anyone's guess. The self-proclaimed World's Greatest Tag Teams had been having frequent blinders with all manner of opponents on the blue brand (including a minor classic against Rey Mysterio and Billy Kidman at Vengeance) whereas young Rene Dupree and Sylvain Grenier had been trying their hardest not to botch every other move in their Raw outings. TWGTT versus The Dudleys would have been a fresh, never-before-seen match. It would be non-title, with the Duds holding the World Tag titles and their opponents holding the WWE Tag Team Championships, but neither being on the line. To make things a little more interesting, the match would be a tables match, the Dudley Boys' speciality. The Dudleys would, of course, be victorious and also put Raw GM Eric Bischoff through the wood in a post-match angle.
