As WCW Champion, Sting's greatest challenge was the best super heavyweight of the era, and possibly all-time, Vader. Vader was already a legend in Japan, and began his rise in WCW not long before this. When watching this match, it was a 1990's version of John Cena vs Brock Lesnar, with Sting managing more offense than Cena usually gets.
More than in any other contest, it was sold as Sting being in the biggest danger of his life. Prior to the match, Jim Ross called Vader the biggest and most powerful man he'd ever seen, after running down Sting's resume of opponents he'd defeated.
What followed was an awesome display of athleticism, and drama. Vader was a completely different opponent than Luger, Flair or Sid. He seemed to be a guy wrestlers just dreaded facing. His size and athletic ability made him a freak of nature, and WCW got it right by having him torture Sting in their first title match.
The final powerbomb Vader dropped Sting with, following a missed Stinger Splash, folded Sting like an accordion, but throughout the contest Sting displayed a great fire, and will to win. It just wasn't enough. He would see Vader down the road though.
