The Best Match From Every 2021 WWE PPV
10. Roman Reigns (c) Vs. Cesaro (WrestleMania Backlash 16 May 2021)
For all the criticism this card faced for needlessly attaching 'WrestleMania' to the neighbouring event's name and spawning memes aplenty, this could well be the entry that faced the most competition for 'Match of the Night'.
Charlotte Flair, Asuka and RAW Women's Champion Rhea Ripley over-delivered. The first ever father-son tag team were crowned champions when Rey and Dominik Mysterio unseated Dolph Ziggler and Robert Roode for the SmackDown straps. Bianca Belair and Bayley had the first of two solid PPV outings with a unique finish. The WWE Championship match was a delightful demolition derby as champion Bobby Lashley, Braun Strowman and Drew McIntyre assembled something you'd expect from the Cruiserweight Classic. However, the night unsurprisingly belonged to The Tribal Chief and The Swiss Superman.
While the outcome was never truly in doubt, for half an hour, Cesaro made believers of us and helped The Universal Champion produce one of the best defences of what is now the longest reign in the title's young history. Like countless predecessors, however, Cesaro eventually succumbed to Reigns' Guillotine Choke after a certified wrestling clinic.
As expected, Cesaro slid down the pecking order almost immediately, relapsing into an unfinished feud with Seth Rollins the following month. Disheartening as it was to see someone of such immense talent have their momentum halted, the fleeting spotlight was a breath of fresh air. For one night, it seemed maybe, just maybe...the King of Swing's decades-long grind on the indies and WWE alike was finally going to be rewarded.
