The Disturbing Truth Behind WWE Super ShowDown
Saudi Arabia, per Amnesty International, is the globe’s third-biggest executioner. And, according to various rights groups, Saudi Arabia “is on course to execute more people this year than any other year this decade.”
Technically, JBL, this does count as change. You’re right.
This change materialised on April 23, 2019, a date on which 37 imprisoned civilians were mass-executed. 14 of the beheaded were convicted on thin, extracted pretext resulting from their political protests between 2011 and 2012. These more recent Saudi human rights atrocities have not registered across the western world, because there is no hook, no overlap with cherished western values. The powerhouses of media bury these stories in the lesser reaches of the 24 hour cycle, live, as Saudi Arabia rolls on. WWE's relationship with Saudi Arabia remains hugely problematic - but the heat of the angle is dying down.
The disturbing truth behind WWE Super ShowDown is that the company many of you grew up watching, the company that granted the wish fulfilment of heroes conquering villains, has reinforced its heel turn to the most brazen, abhorrent extent imaginable. This company was built by the blood of a true gentleman, in Bruno Sammartino. It is preserved, now, by a conductor of genocide.
The WWE/SGA relationship does not “change”, but rather enables the relentlessly horrific preservation of the entitlement of wealth.
But hey, Goldberg’s back!
