The Undertaker vs Batista succeeds by defying expectations. A big man vs big man match can often be the recipe for a snorefest, but this match bucks the trend majorly. Taker and Batista have something to prove here, and they work a tight and impactful 15 minute bout resulting in one of the surprisingly few WrestleMania championship grabs of the Deadman’s career.

Neither competitors were at all happy with their position on the card, but they used that frustration to create a bruising and surprising match. Batista had as good chemistry with ‘Taker as he did with anyone, and the two bring out the best in each other. Undertaker hits his top rope dive in what would turn into one of his best recurring ‘Mania spots, and big Dave lands a thumping table to table powerslam.

A super hot crowd caps off an unsung destructive classic. Undertaker had fought big matches before, but this, as we’ll see, is the start of his truly glorious WrestleMania period. It’s big, splashy, violent fun done absolutely right. The Michaels/Cena main event is great, but perhaps Mark and Dave should have had the spot.
