The Real Reason Why John Cena Stopped Rapping In WWE

From 'Doctor Of Thuganomics' to PG era scapegoat?

John Cena Rap

John Cena has revealed the real reason why he decided to stop rapping on WWE TV.

During the latest episode of the Network-exclusive series on the promotion's 'Ruthless Aggression' era, Cena said he started to notice that WWE's fanbase was changing before his very eyes. He didn't "need an analytics sheet" to see that more children and young families were attending live events.

Without hesitating, John marched into Vince McMahon's office and said they had to change things up "right now".

This is why Cena's character started to become more family friendly, and it's why those who enjoyed his bad-boy rap image started to view him as a corporate shill. The boos began ringing out around arenas whenever Cena appeared, but he doesn't regret putting a stop to his popular rhyming promos.

Cena doesn't think they would've flown during the PG era anyway, and he wouldn't have felt comfortable lacing his raps with sexual innuendos when young kids were sitting at ringside. Plus (and this is the bit the doc didn't touch on), he and WWE probably spotted a goldmine waiting for them in merch sales if Cena became more child-friendly.
